Seems to me they really want that persistent connection to the device - and that's what bothers me to no end. For example, what if they are capturing your email or web traffic, or just top traffic stats, or even hits to the WAN that are denied by the firewall - all that is too much info in the wrong hands, and they have no right to it.

I don't have any problems having to register on the manufactures/download web site to get the firmware file (that's annoying when manufactures do that, but an acceptable hope to jump through) What's NOT OK is having the device connect directly with the manufacture, because regardless of what "security" is built in to that connection, there are plenty man-in-the-middle ways to circumvent/capture/push bad firmware via that mechanism, not to mention that fact that nobody will own up to what info is being transmitted back and fourth. Once you setup device registration, it can never be undone. If you try to do the "auto upgrade" via the management interface, then it also won't find/use the latest, without the device being registered.

I realize the firmware can still be found for download on the EU sites, and other places (and their authentic, as in, the checksums match) so I can manually upload the firmware file to the device, but apparently unless the device is setup to be registered with the manufacture, it won't use the later firmware and revert to the earlier one.

I already implement Cisco Small business and real Cisco for customers that can afford it, but I'm looking for something else to fit the "not an arm and a leg" price tag. (also isn't Ubiquity cause I'm not their perpetual beta tester, not MikroTik cause of high failures and oddities, and not Linksys/Netgear/Dlink cause that's home-grade stuff that has to be power cycled constantly) In today's day and age, that's a pretty brash move to force a boarder gateway security device to connect with the manufacture, for any reason.Īnyone found a way around this? Pretty much kills my appetite for the product.ĭoes anyone else have a favorite firewall hardware box they like, that doesn't hold you hostage for firmware updates, nor requires registration.

Now I'm learning that if you want to update their newer gear (USG 40, etc.) with the later firmware, you must register the device with them, which if you aren't familiar means the device will contact them (for what, who knows, don't care) even if you aren't using the optional subscription stuff. Never purchased any of their subscription stuff either (virus scan, content filter, etc.) cause I use a different DNS-based product without a subscription and I've been plenty happy with that. I've been a big fan of the Zywall USG 50, 100, etc. firewalls for years.
